Everyone’s favorite parent in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is named Atticus. Atticus Finch, a lawyer from Alabama, is intelligent, fair, and caring in a harsh manner. In actuality, the Greek meaning of the name Atticus is simply “from Attica.” However, this academic-sounding name has taken on a tone of impartiality, humility, and grace.

2. Cash

Cash as a first name debuted in the U.S. Social Security baby names list in 1885, although it may seem hipsterish today. This popular surname-cum-given name is derived from the Latin word cassus, which means “empty” or “hollow.” If ever a name did not correspond to its meaning, it is this one. Cash is a vibrant name for children. Country and western music legend Johnny Cash, who was born in Arkansas, is the most evident impact on the popularity of this name.

3. Dawson

Dawson has one pedigree as the last name of Alabama-born Black composer William Dawson, who ran away from home to study music at the Tuskegee Institute when he was 13 years old. Best known for composing the acclaimed Negro Folk Symphony, he went on to launch this historically Black university’s first music school. This name means “son of Elias” in Scandinavian languages.

5. Tennessee

Tennessee the person name comes from Tennessee the state, dubbed thus in a derivation of the Native American word tanasqui (also spelled ta’nasi) by way of explorers, settlers, and then early government figures who came to the region; it was said to be the name of both a river and a Cherokee town. 8. Grady

Grady Champion is an acclaimed blues musician from Mississippi and Grady Wallace was an NCAA basketball star.

9. Rufus

Rufus is a Roman family name meaning “red-haired” or “ruddy” in Latin. This unique yet classic name was given to one of the sons of William the Conqueror, a King of England. It’s also shared by University of Mississippi football All American Rufus French and musician Rufus Wainwright. If you’re looking for a vintage yet hip Southern name, Rufus is it.

10. Beau

Beau is one of those simple names with lots of resonance. There is allure in its old-fashioned meaning of someone courting your fancy or whose fancy you court.
