Most women feel fulfilled when they become mothers. However, when the wonderful gift of motherhood doesn’t come, it can sometimes be torturous and become an obsession. Many couples undergo countless treatments in their quest to start a family.
And when a baby finally arrives, it is the parents who are the first to rejoice in the birth of that new child. But what happened to this woman was quite the opposite.
The couple had been trying for over 20 years to get the woman pregnant, without any successful results.
Until finally, at the age of 60, her dream came true. Despite it seeming like a crazy idea, her husband stood by her during the pregnancy. Everything was going well until the moment of truth arrived: when the baby was born, the husband heard the first cry and couldn’t bear it, abandoning the woman who had just given birth with their newborn baby.
Apparently, the husband, named Serif Nokic, 68 years old, suddenly changed his mind upon hearing the baby cry in the maternity room and told his wife, Atifa Ljajic, that he was too old to bear the crying and everything that would come after.
Thus, the baby, named Alina, arrived in Novi Pazar, in the Raska district, in western Serbia, with a mother nearing old age and without a recognized father, as Serif has not even agreed to give her his surname.
Speculations suggest that the couple might have used an anonymous sperm donor for her conception, given the extreme way he rejected her.
When asked about abandoning the new mother Atifa, Serif said, “She got what she wanted, now she’s happy.” He mentioned that it was too much for him, that living with a baby at his age would be too detrimental to his health, and that he couldn’t bear sleepless nights.
“Most importantly, I am a sick man. I am 68 years old, diabetic, and have a weak heart,” Serif said.
And the father is not the only one with health issues; Atifa also has her own, including high blood pressure. However, she says she doesn’t mind. She feels physically and emotionally prepared to take care of her daughter.
Regardless of what happens, whether Serif stays or leaves, I will fight to take care of Alina in the best possible way and to put her on the right path. I will live for her alone.
When doctors saw Atifa, they said her pregnancy would be high-risk, and she was hospitalized for the three months leading up to delivery.
Ever since Atifa held Alina in her arms for the first time, Serif decided that he didn’t want to be with his new family anymore.
Atifa, who works in a textile factory, says she will raise her baby on her own, even though she has little money. However, she remains hopeful that there are still kind-hearted people who can help her. She doesn’t have close relatives who can take care of the situation.
Regarding pregnancy, the truth is that when she was about to turn 60, she had already considered giving up on the idea; that’s when the doctors told her that her fertility treatment had been successful.
She knew it would pose a great risk due to my age, but my only desire in life was to have a child, and it happened to me… I wasn’t afraid of my life at all, God gave me courage. I’ve never felt better.
A great lesson in courage and bravery. But many wonder if Atifa’s desire and dream to have a child went too far, putting her life and the life of her baby at risk.
The story that surprised Serbia, Atifa and Alina remain alone.
Novi Pazar resident Atifa Ljajić gave birth to a healthy baby girl at the age of 60. She is the second oldest mother in Serbia. Last night, the mother and baby arrived in their hometown in a hospital ambulance, and the RTS team visited this brave woman who lives modestly in a rented room.
