The Kelpies is a prominent sculpture at the heart of the Helix project, an entertainment district in Falkirk, Scotland. This massive structure consists of two majestic horse heads, each 30 m high and each made of 300 tons of steel.
The sculptures were designed by sculptor Andy Scott, completed in October 2013, and open to visitors in April 2014.
The name Kelpies reflects the shape-shifting mythical beasts that possess the strength and durability of ten horses. Kelpias represent the heavy horse lineage of Scottish industry and economics.
Sculptor andy scott explains that the 100-foot-tall sculptures honor the heavy horses that used to pull the barges along the canal that connected Edinburgh to Glasgow, as well as the horses that worked in the fields.
in the first year after the opening, almost a million visitors visited these two sculptures. The two horse-headed statues are beautifully lit and change color every night.
Two “terrible” horse heads were built on the site in just 90 days. These statues not only attract tourists but also the pride of local people.
Mike Cantlay, Chairman of the National Tourism Organization for Scotland, said: “Seaweed celebrates the myth and folklore that have encapsulated the imagination of visitors to Scotland for centuries.”
