Lionel Messi has revealed what he will do on his retirement day.
In a 2018 post, Lionel Messi unexpectedly revealed his retirement plans. Specifically, the Argentine superstar wanted to pay tribute to the jerseys that made his name, including FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team.
Specifically, Messi said: “On the day I retire, I will organize a farewell match, 45 minutes wearing the Argentina national team shirt and the remaining 45 minutes wearing the Barcelona shirt.”
Lionel Messi has had a glittering career at Barcelona, where he spent his entire youth. During his 17-year stay, Messi played 778 games for the club, scoring 672 goals and providing 302 assists, becoming the greatest scorer in the history of the Catalan club.
The above personal achievements also helped El Pulga reap countless titles, including 10 La Liga, 7 Copa del Rey and 4 Champions League. In addition, the legendary number 10 of Barca also had the honor of being awarded the Golden Ball award seven times while playing for Blaugrana, thereby becoming an irreplaceable symbol of the team.
In the Argentina national team, Messi also showed his number one role in the squad. The former PSG star has made 191 appearances for La Albiceleste, scoring 112 goals and providing 58 assists.
After the team’s dark years, Messi was rewarded with consecutive titles, starting with the 2021 Copa America title, then culminating in the 2022 World Cup championship in Qatar.
Currently, Messi, at the age of 37, is still playing at the top level for Inter Miami. The Argentine superstar has admitted that Inter Miami will be his last club, but also affirmed that he has no intention of retiring at this time.
Messi said: “Inter Miami will be my last club. I love football and the more I play, the more I enjoy it, because I realize that my playing time is getting shorter. I still feel happy. At Inter Miami, I am lucky to have teammates and friends by my side. That feeling is no different than with the national team.”
After contributing greatly to The Herons’ MLS Supporters’ Shield championship, Messi and his teammates will return to training early next year to get ready for the new season.
