Travel photography blog, Capture the Atlas, has selected 25 of the year’s best photos of the colorful display of light that illuminates the skies of the polar regions around the North Pole and South Pole. These natural polar lights are called the aurora borealis.
The phenomenon is caused by the solar wind hitting the magnetic field around the Earth. When electrons and protons from these solar winds hit particles in the planet’s atmosphere, they release energy. It is this energy that causes the aurora.
Take a look at some of the stunning aurora images taken by the photographers of the “Northern Lights Photographer” competition.
