It was evident that their life was no longer blissful like it used to be when we visited them for the first time. The main reason behind this abrupt change was the departure of Abdul’s wife, Susan. Abdul had seen his wife unhappy at times, but he never thought it would lead her to leave him without a word.
Believe me, I had no ill feelings towards my wife, and we never engaged in any fights. We used to live a good life without quarrels or major problems; we only had small issues, including poverty. I always made sure to provide for my family. But one day, I visited our neighbors, and when I returned home, she had packed everything and left.
It took a while for Abdul to realize that his wife had left after neighbors spread rumors about him. They discouraged her from living with him, telling her that she had made a big mistake by marrying a disabled person. They convinced her that the poverty they endured was a result of bad choices, advising her to leave Abdul if she wanted to change her life.
She used to listen to these rumors frequently, and they affected her deeply. Neighboring women encouraged her to leave him so she could start anew. She began to believe these rumors, and at times, she would even engage with other men. I persevered, thinking that things would change, but instead, she became more resolute. She would often tell me that she regretted the day she married me. I didn’t take it seriously until she left, and when I asked her why, she replied that she had informed me about it. She left because of my poverty and disability. I asked her if she didn’t know about it before she married me, but she had no answer.
The news of her departure and Abdul’s unsuccessful attempts to bring her back left him devastated. For the first time, he questioned why he was born like this. Abdul, despite his challenges, had managed to build his life from scratch. He worked as an architect in his neighborhood and taught himself various skills. However, his disability limited his ability to earn a substantial income, and he believed that this poverty was the reason his wife left him.
We had deep troubles with poverty by the time she decided to leave me. Our life together was dominated by a lack of money, and it overwhelmed her. I could see that she was struggling to adapt to our difficult situation, and eventually, she chose to leave me. I am sure that if I were financially stable, she would not have left but stayed with me. Perhaps she thought that a man with no arms and legs would not be able to provide the life she wanted to live. However, I am thankful to her because she agreed to give birth to my daughter, whom I am very proud of.
Magdalene, Abdul’s mother, is relieved by the separation, as she never approved of Susan’s bad behavior, including drunkenness. Her main concern now is the survival of her son, whom she had protected against all odds since he was young. When Abdul was born, she praised the Lord and saw him as a miraculous child. Abdul developed early compared to other children, which confirmed her belief in his greatness despite his disability.
Abdul adores his daughter, but his worries are far from over. She is at the age of attending school, but he lacks the financial means to enroll her. He attempts to homeschool her, but with limited school equipment, skills, and time, he is not as successful as he would like to be. He dreams of enrolling her in a real school.
Abdul has many other concerns, the most pressing of which is finding a regular source of income. He struggles to gather enough money to start a business he had vowed to launch some time ago. During our recent visit, we provided him with a wheelchair to help him move around, but this is just a small relief in the face of the numerous challenges he faces daily.
