Durian is not only the king of fruits, but also irreplaceable in the minds of Malaysians. If you want to choose a fruit as a national fruit, then durian must be among the best. Every year when the durian season comes, I always feel uncomfortable without eating durian. It can be seen that durian has penetrated into the bones of Malaysians. However, have you ever seen or tasted a durian that is as small as a palm or a durian that looks strange?
In East Malaysia, there are two special varieties of durian that are only about the size of a rattan ball. These two varieties are Durian Sukang with red pulp and Durian Sukang with orange pulp. Dalit). They grow in East Malaysia, namely Sabah and Sarawak, so they are rarely seen in West Malaysia.
The above two varieties of durians are generally called “mountain durians” in the local area. Their appearance is somewhat different from other durians, with thinner shells and denser spines. In addition, the durians of these two varieties are somewhat different in taste. According to the locals, its smell is not as strong as durians such as D24 and Musang King, but its taste is very strong, twice that of ordinary durians!
Among the two durian varieties, the Dalit durian has a weaker fragrance and thinner flesh, but it tastes sweet and sometimes slightly sour, making it more addictive! Sukang durian tastes a bit astringent, but it has a hint of wine aroma, and it will have a light fragrance similar to flowers in the end!
The production season of these two durian varieties is between October and December, so friends in East Malaysia, don’t miss it! And the price is very cheap, about 2-3 ringgit each. Because it is so small and exquisite, durian sellers usually sell it in bunches, and the price ranges from 15 to 35 ringgits per kilogram, depending on where the durians are harvested and sold.
In addition to these two durian varieties, there is a rare variety called Tahis durian (Durian Tahis) deep in the jungle of Borneo. Its outer shell is bright red, and the durian fruit has long and sharp spikes. Also, Tahis durian doesn’t have any weak seams to open, so the way the locals open it is to just cut it in half and eat it!
It is said that Tahis durian is the durian with the strongest smell among all durian varieties. Even if it is more than one kilometer away in the jungle, you can smell its durian smell! In addition to having a strong durian aroma, the pulp taste is also very strong, and some people even say that it tastes better than Musang King and Black Thorn! Tahis durian has soft flesh and is very sweet. It tastes a bit like mint chocolate, which is amazing!
In addition, there is a variety known as Durian Hantu. The reason why it has this name is that although this variety of durian is not uncommon in the local area, it is the most elusive one. If you look for it specifically, you will often not find it. Pop out in front of you like a ghost! Another theory is because of the shape of the ghost durian, which is slender and hard and has a gray-blue peel, just like a ghost. The ghost durian does not have much pulp, and it is said that the taste is only average.
I don’t know what special varieties of durians you know or have tasted? May wish to share with us by leaving a message in the comment area!
