Each one of us is unique and special, in our own way, and it is this uniqueness that makes us different. Appreciating diversity from an early age therefore means growing up in harmony with everyone and being proud of each other’s uniqueness. That is what Nicole Hall is trying to convey to her daughter for her life with optimism.
Winry Hall is a 13-month-old girl with a distinctive facial feature. The girl was born with an extremely rare birthmask called congenital melanoc melanoc nevi nevi (CMN). The patch of skin extends over a quarter of her face; covers the bridge of the nose, over the eye and forehead, and over part of the cheek.
As Winry grows older, her mother, Nicole Hall, is dedicated to celebrating her daughter’s unique beauty and a way that she is different from others. Her older siƄlings call it her “special mark” and that is exactly how we see it too, she is special. She’s even more beautiful with hers ʙɪʀᴛʜᴍᴀʀᴋ hers and we’ll be sure to tell her every day.
Ebony and Jamie, 34, met in 2016 and have a three-year-old son, Harley. Jamie also has an older daughter, Hollie, aged nine, from a lovely relationship. Winry joined her little family in September 2020, weighing in at 8 liters, 4 ounces. Ella eƅony says she: “The pregnancy went well and Winry delivered as planned. When she was born, Jamie told me: “She has a really Ƅig birthmask on her face. When I saw her, I was speechless. I couldn’t believe half of her entire face was covered.
I was in shock, I think, and it wasn’t until about two weeks later that I sat up and poured out my heart. I wasn’t crying for myself, but I was crying for Winry and all the prejudices she will face in the future.”
She added: “I am so worried about his start at school and how people can be, both children and adults. Specialists have told the family that the birthmask is a congenital melanocelanoc naevus, and a large one on the face is so rare that it happens to 1 in 20,000 births. Fortunately, it’s simply a birthmask and is unlikely to cause Winry any serious heath issues, though she’ll have more proof. She has other smaller birthmasks, known as satellites, around her body, but these are also harmless.
The couple were offered the option to refund the birthmask again, which would not be scarred and scarred. Ebony says: “The birthmask has faded a bit since it was born, but it will never fade completely. We decided to leave the sᴜʀɢᴇʀʏ until Winry is old enough to make her own decisions. It’s a huge company and she should be the one to decide. For us now, he’s a part of her and we can’t imagine our daughter without him. Her development is perfect and she is a very cheeky and mischievous girl.”
People are so much more than their outward appearance, and it’s Winry’s personality that makes her unique. Hall shares, “She just radiates joy. She almost always is laughing or shrieking. She is simply the happiest baby I have ever seen. She’s already a chatterbox.
We don’t have a lot of words, but she tells you like it is and she’s getting a bit forward already, so I think we’ll have a lot on our hands. Her brother and her sister Ƅig adore her and call her birthmask; “the special mark”. I know that life will not be easy for Winry, she will face many challenges. But it’s our job to make her feel special and make her see that the birthmask makes her even more beautiful.”
