Silje Andersen-Cooke and her husband wanted to give their son a sibling, but their second pregnancy didn’t go as expected. At the ultrasound, a surprise awaited her, which as she said, was the most beautiful thing in her life!
Lawyer and partner Jordan, already parents to their 18-month-old son Mads, felt confident with this pregnancy. Thinking that, for the second time, they knew what to expect. Except, that is, until they were told it wasn’t one, not two, but three tiny heartbeats.
“My gynecologist revealed to me that I wasn’t expecting one, not two, but three babies who, a few months later, made me the happiest woman in the world,” said the young mother. “At first, I was anxious and bombarded the midwife with questions so that the fetuses were not in danger,” she said, adding:
“The pregnancy wasn’t easy. I was more anxious than the first time, and I was constantly worried if my babies would cry. At 30 weeks, I stopped working and was bedridden for four weeks until the scheduled delivery.”
Finally, the three siblings were brought together through a Caesarean section. The delivery went smoothly. Our triplets were born two minutes apart. First was Ada, weighing 1.8 kg, then Teddy, weighing 2.1 kg, and finally Erik, weighing 2.3 kg.
During the first few days, they stayed in an incubator, while our little one had to undergo an operation. Fortunately, everything went well, and we are finally all together at home. It may have been a tough adventure, but it was worth it every moment! The new members of our family completed our happiness.
Once at home, Jordan and Silje went into ‘survival mode’, following a three-hour feeding schedule throughout the day: Silje tandem breastfed and gave a bottle of expressed milk, and I tried to prepare for the nighttime feeds, accommodating each one as they woke up. Then waking up the next day to do it all over again, while juggling a busy toddler. “I loved breastfeeding, but it was very physically demanding and it became very heavy, and my milk probably didn’t come in the afternoons, so we struggled a lot. It became so hard at four months, so we started to supplement.”
Silje has received help from a ‘community’ of family and friends to drop off food to entertain Mads. “Having the help we established was the only reason I could keep my mental health together, really. It’s so invaluable. I wouldn’t change it, but more help would have been incredible.”
