Digna Carpio is already impressed with her six children, so it will be hard to wow her even more this Mother’s Day. In October, Carpio gave birth to sextuplets – six healthy babies that are a true blessing worth celebrating. Since Carpio just welcomed six little ones, she is already feeling overjoyed this Mother’s Day with her half-dozen gems.
“Simply spending time together and having a calm, relaxing day with all my babies is enough,” shared the 31-year-old Digna in Spanish. She then jokingly added, “But ‘relaxing’ and ‘quiet’ are hard to come by in this house now with six little ones!” Even just being together with her six newborns is a perfect Mother’s Day for Digna. But with sextuplets filling her home, a completely peaceful and quiet day is nearly impossible, as Digna lightheartedly admitted.
Digna and her husband Victor are adjusting to a full house with their new sextuplets. The couple also has an eight-year-old son named Jhan Carlos.
“It’s challenging to go out with six babies,” shared Digna. “But just having them with me, knowing they are happy and healthy, gives me the best feeling.” For Digna, simply being with her six new bundles of joy and seeing them thrive is what matters most, even if taking all six out is difficult.
One recent afternoon, the sextuplets were resting in six bassinets neatly arranged in two rows in the living room. Genesis smiled in anticipation of feeding time, while the typically quiet Justin waited patiently. When Jaden started crying, Joel, Jezreel, and Danelia quickly joined in chorus.
“Even though they look identical to others, each baby is already developing their own personality,” explained their mom Digna. “I can already tell them apart.” Digna is getting to know each of her sextuplets’ emerging temperaments, and can identify each one even though they appear the same.
While filled with joy, Digna and Victor admit raising sextuplets has required sacrifice. Expenses like $5,000 electricity bills, baby food, and endless diapers strain their limited finances. Victor, a 35-year-old maintenance worker earning $900 biweekly, struggles to cover the mounting costs.
The Carpio babies hold a rare distinction – they are only the second set of sextuplets born to a New York couple and are believed to be the first Hispanic sextuplets in U.S. history. Their arrival, while a blessing, has presented economic challenges for their working-class parents.
Two visiting nurses help care for the sextuplets until 6pm, after which Digna and Victor are on their own. Sleep becomes a luxury with six newborns needing attention overnight.
“I don’t want to feel overwhelmed,” shared Digna. “I’m already thinking we’ll need a van or bus to get them to school someday!”
Though money will remain tight for years, Digna and Victor find it all worthwhile gazing at their babies’ adorable faces.
“Sometimes I feel crazy, but then I look at them – it’s the best feeling,” said Digna. “They are the greatest gift for a mother.” Despite exhaustion and financial strain, Digna and Victor find pure joy in their six little miracles.
