A health product company from Japan has plenty to celebrate after growing the world’s heaviest radish.
It weighs a whopping 45.865 kg (101 lbs), about the same as a baby hippo, with the animals typically weighing in between 30-50 kg (66-110 lbs) at birth.
The record-breaking radish, grown by Manda Fermentation Co., is nearly 15 kg (33 lbs) heavier than the previous record set by Manabu Ono (also Japan) in 2003.

One of Manda Fermentation’s products is Manda Hakko, a fermented food product made from over 53 kinds of raw materials including fruits, grains, seaweeds, and vegetables. They also have Manda Hakko that’s made specially for growing plants, a winning recipe that led to the creation of the record-breaking radish.
The radish used for the record attempt is a cross between a Sakurajima radish and a Taibyo-Sobutori radish, which usually weigh 1-2 kg (2.2-4.4 lbs) and 6 kg (13.2 lbs) respectively.
Seeding was carried out at the end of August last year, when the 12 seedlings were thinned out to just a single plant over the following couple of weeks.
The staff had a tough decision as to which radish should be thinned out.
The root of the plant has to be covered with soil as the radish grows. And there has to be a gap of over one metre between radishes.
On the day of harvest, the staff carefully extracted the giant radish from the soil. It was a struggle to do so even with four staff because of its startling weight, but they had a crowd there to cheer them on as it was uncovered.
We’ve put a lot into this project, and never have we thought long and hard about radish as we did during this record attempt. I think we’ve shown our skill in growing vegetables as well as our Manda Koso products. We hope to use our technology and technique to contribute to the health and wellness of people and our mother earth.
