The Las Vegas Raiders keep talking big about taking down Patrick Mahomes.
Especially Raiders star defender Maxx Crosby, who again addressed the team’s new Mahomes Rules that plan to treat the three-time Super Bowl winner like Michael Jordan.
The Bad Boy Detroit Pistons created the infamous Jordan Rules, which saw one of the toughest teams in NBA history aggressively attack the greatest player in league history play after play.
Jordan was consistently hammered by Detroit as the Pistons won back-to-back world titles before giving way to the Bulls’ dynasty.
Despite Las Vegas going 8-9 last season and failing to make the playoffs, the Raiders have talked and talked since adding Antonio Pierce as head coach.
While Andy Reid, Travis Kelce and Mahomes won Super Bowl LVIII in overtime against the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas, the city’s NFL team has let the world know that it plans to hammer Mahomes harder than ever in 2024.
“We’ve got the Jordan Rules and we’ve got what I’m calling now, from now on as long as I’m here, the Patrick Mahomes Rules,” Pierce said on Crosby’s podcast. “You remember when Jordan was going through it with the Pistons, the Pistons used to whip his a**. Any time he came to the hole, elbows, feeling him, love taps.
“We’re in his head, mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, I’m touching you. So I showed my guys Jordan getting his a** whooped.”
Crosby has become Mahomes’ main rival across the line of scrimmage.
While there’s mutual respect between the two, there’s also the reality that one of the NFL’s toughest defenders isn’t afraid of Mahomes or the Chiefs’ dynasty.
Crosby laughed when he was asked about the new Mahomes Rules.
But the three-time Pro Bowler also made it clear that the rules are a real thing.
“He’s got multiple MVPs and Super Bowls,” Crosby said. “At the end of the day, if we want to win, we’ve got to take him down. We’re not shy about that.
“He knows that every time I play him, every time I see him, I’m trying to ruin his day. That goes for everybody. People can take that whatever they want or whatever, but he knows I’m coming for him.
“I’m on that energy every time and I know my teammates are, as well. It’s not malicious or whatever. People are trying to say we’re trying to purposefully injure him or whatever. It’s a bunch of BS.
“We play the game the right way but we play it with ill intent. We play violent and fast, and we plan on doing that for years to come.”
Fans are divided about the Raiders being so public with their plan of attack.
Especially considering that the NFL has been unable to stop Mahomes and he’s already built a dynasty with the Chiefs, while playing in the same AFC West division as Crosby and the Raiders.
“Love Maxx as a competitor, but Antonio Pierce should’ve kept the Mahomes Rules to himself and Maxx knows that, too,” one fan tweeted. “Last thing you want to give Mahomes is more bulletin board material.”
“I was with him until he said ‘with ill intent,’ a second fan posted. “I mean, perhaps he doesn’t know what that means. Meaning: having malicious intentions.”
“This is a huge mistake,” a third fan wrote.
Crosby and the Raiders are talking big in March — six months away from kickoff for a new NFL season.
