“I was looking at the names of the incredible legends who won the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award before me: Schumacher, Woods, Nadal, Federer, Bolt, Hamilton, Djokovic… it really sank in what incredible company I am in and what a unique honour it is,” Messi said.

Sprint champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce took the top women’s honour after a superb 2022, which included winning 100m gold at the World Athletics Championships.

Tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, who won the 2022 US Open and rose to number one in the ATP rankings, was named Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year.

Christian Eriksen, who recovered from a cardiac arrest at Euro 2021 to return to the Premier League with Brentford and then Manchester United before competing at the World Cup with Denmark, has been awarded the Laureus World Comeback Player of the Year Award.
